VOIP is an emerging technology which will be of immense importance in the future. VOIP will allow groups, offices, branches and individuals, all on the internet , to use their connection not just for data transfer but also low cost voice communication. Calls can also be passed free of charge anywhere in the world if the IP network is in place and "breakout" locally. For example, a company has two offices one in London and one in New York. If a one of the London workers wishes to call a client in America the call will be passed over the IP network and "breakout" in NY so that the call would only cost the local call charges
Individual PCs can be used require a listening device, such as headphones, or a specialised handset can be used in instead of a PC . Another important requirement is bandwidth and at present, this is expensive for large connections but with the continual reduction of IP costs, this will not be an issue in the future. There is not yet a dominant standard but this position will soon change.
Before you commit to VOIP, please ensure that your objectives cannot be met by existing lower cost and established technology i.e. calls to an advisor can be transferred using a virtual call centre to other locations by the advisor simply pressing designated phone keys.
